handmade gifts: part 2

::fire starter kits

This was one of my favorite gifts this year. One day, while on a family bike ride, I noticed a custom cabinet shop with a giant bin outside full of scrap wood labeled FREE! Right then and there it came to me - we need to make fire starter kits!  So, my husband returned later that afternoon and gathered a bunch of wood and cut it to size. The fabric carrier was made from thrifted fabric, and using wax and sawdust we created the actual "fire starters"  - WOW, they work well (my father-in-law called up and ordered 100 more!)

This kit is perfect for camping - which we LOVE to do (and so do many of our friends and family).

  2. The fire starters are very easy to make, I simply melted wax and poured it over the sawdust.

  9. Wonderful! I would love to know how you made the bars of fire starter look so nice. Soap mold? Do share unless you go professional with this. Thanks for the idea!

  10. Thanks Fiberwhimstress! I did use a soap mold, and it worked great. But I soon realized that this size was just too big. So, I found some smaller molds on Etsy that are about 1" x 3 5/8" x 1/2" and they are the perfect size.
